Hurricane Tracker App first launched in the App Store in 2010 in the early days of iOS. Since then our app has been the leader in tracking tropical systems in iPhone and iPad in terms of our 4.8 average star rating in the App Store and the number of users who hit up our servers each summer to get storm information.

We used to cover our costs and the time we put into this app by charging $2.99 for each app download. This worked well for many years. However, in the last few years, app downloads have dramatically decreased for most apps as users now have the apps they want/need. Most apps now require a subscription to use even the basic version. We did not want to make our app itself a subscription since the info this app provides is critical to the users who need it. We had to make a business decision to keep this app going so we decided to make our app FREE and offer premium graphics on the main page to more users.

In 2020, we launched our premium graphics option which gives those who upgrade way better high resolution storm graphics which include more geographical information along with wind swath graphics. Without this product and our users who have upgraded the last few years, Hurricane Tracker would have shut down in 2021.

Going forward, we made a business decison to make the app free and have premium graphics subscriptions cover our server fees and other costs associated with running this app full time 24/7 each summer. The pop up will only show during periods of inactivity to alert users of our premium offering. It can easily be dismissed. When we are tracking active storms and you are checking the app often for updates the pop up will not be displayed.
